1. they definitely could be living on a farm 2. the cat is the "I" in the second sentence, and likes licking that old, cold hand (as Tone already pointed out) 3. maybe the cat is very old indeed, but it's impossible to tell from the picture really... 4. the cane is actually the top half of a big umbrella
I am baffled. the eight graders today must be a bunch of geniuses.

I know. My cat isn't very old.
And I have to add an alternative, suggested by one of the members of Underskog:
